After a long week of work, the only thing I want to do on weekends is treat myself. I deserve it right? Self-care? One of my ways of “treating myself” is through delicious treats. I do my best to eat healthy and in moderation during the week, so I take the two days of weekend to let loose and divulge in my favorite – BOBA!
This weekend, I was able to support a local business called It’s Tea. It’s Tea is a small tea shop located in the Ward area (about a block away from Whole Foods), and specializes in fresh cold-brew teas. I wanted to go with my usual order of black milk tea with boba, but the chalkboard outside caught my eye. How could I not order something that sounds as enticing as “Okinawa Black Sugar, with fresh milk tea, custard cake, and tapioca”?! Oh, it was definitely a treat! The owner informed us that they cook their sugar for about two hours, and caramelize it just enough to get a bit of the “burnt sugar” taste. My mind immediately went to creme brulee, my favorite dessert! She was kind to inform us that there is no caffeine in the drink, the sugar is actually what causes the milk tea taste, and they make their custard cake fresh in-house. She was so convincing in her spiel that my boyfriend changed his order to get that drink too.
When we got our teas, we immediately gazed at the ribbons of black sugar dripping down the inside of the cup. We could see the creamy custard cake peeking through the fresh milk, and the black tapioca balls sitting at the bottom of the cup. If you’re looking for a photogenic drink to post on your Instagram, this would be it! After I posted this on my story, I got many replies asking where I got my drink from. The owner then suggested that after we take our pictures, we mix everything together to achieve the milk tea taste. Although there was no black tea in the drink, it surprisingly tasted like milk tea! The custard cake was silky like flan, but not too sweet. The boba was perfectly chewy, and was a good amount of sweetness from the black sugar.
Great customer service, great looking drink, supporting a local business, and I had amazing tea! What more could I ask for in my weekend treat?! You should try it out, and let me know what you think 🙂
