Let me tell you about my latest crave… burgers! Growing up, getting a burger meant buying a cheeseburger from McDonalds or getting a Whopper from Burger King. My family didn’t really put much thought to a burger, it was just a quick lunch. Burgers were deemed as a “lunch only” food in my house, and even at that I didn’t care if I had one or didn’t have one. But let me tell you… Lately I feel like I’ve been wanting a good burger almost every other week! Honestly, the only burger I crave is from Chubbies!
Chubbies is a local food truck that specializes in classic “smash burgers”. A smash burger is a burger that is made with a patty that has been flattened by a spatula during the cooking process. The smashing ensures a quick sear on the outside while the burger stays juicy inside. Chubbies uses premium grass-fed local beef, homemade sauces, and they even make their buns! Talk about quality! The menu consists of four types of burgers (including one house-made veggie burger), three fry choices, onion rings, milkshakes, and vanilla custard. I’ve always admired a food joint that has a small menu because you just know they have extreme confidence that those menu items will carry the business. Chubbies does not disappoint!
My favorite is the El Rey burger with fries. It comes with a grass-fed local beef patty, pepper-jack cheese, sliced avocado (none of that mashed stuff – SLICED!), house-made garlic ranch, and two onion rings all nestled between two fluffy buns. This burger is seriously no joke. The patty is seasoned well and is enhanced by the cheese, the avocado perfectly complements the crunchy onion rings, and the garlic ranch is legendary. I love garlic, and I could probably drink this sauce straight if I had no will power. It’s that good! I wish I could bring myself to order extra sauce but I’m reminded of the extra calories that I will definitely consume if I get it.
The fries from Chubbies are one of the only two crinkle-cut french fries I’ll enjoy. The other crinkle-cut fries I like are from Shake Shack. But other than Chubbies and Shake Shack, no thanks. Their fries are also expertly seasoned and the right balance of crunchy and potato-y. My family has yet to join me on the Chubbies crinkle-cut french fry train, but I’m sure I can convince them to hop on.
If you’re looking for an amazing burger, look no further than Chubbies in Ward. Get a burger, some fries, and sit in the new grassy park in the lot next door. I promise you that this burger is worth every bite. I’m going to save some room next time to try some of their vanilla custard. YUM! What do you think makes a perfect burger? Let me know!
