Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you are having a great start to your new year. I have a great feeling about this year, and after 2020 I’m sure many people can benefit from positive spirits. The air feels lighter, and I feel like everyone is looking to put their best foot forward.
To kick off the new year we planned a staycation in Waikiki. It was so nice to relax and pretend we were somewhere else for the weekend. While we were in Waikiki I wanted to eat all the yummy foods that I was missing out on. Usually I try to stay out of Waikiki to avoid tourists, traffic, and the crazy parking prices. I’ve been wanting to try Kona Coffee Purveyors for a long time now, and this past weekend was the time to do so! I’ve heard nothing but great things about the pastries at Kona Coffee Purveyors in the new International Marketplace and I was so excited to get the chance to eat there for breakfast. I learned that the pastries are from B. Patisserie, a bakery that originates in San Francisco. I’ve scrolled through their Instagram page and drooled over their posts.
On Saturday morning we went to Kona Coffee Purveyors on the first floor of International Marketplace and it was beautiful. The interior was modern and my eyes were immediately caught by the flaky golden brown pastries in the glass case. It’s like the copper detailing in the cafe was placed to make the buttery pillows of calories glisten in the natural sunlight coming from the floor-to-ceiling windows. We ordered two cold brew coffees, two kouign amann, and a croissant. I almost ordered more, but at $6 a pastry I had to have some restraint.
The coffees were smooth and bold. I could tell that it was good coffee because I didn’t need to add any cream or sugar. If you know me, you know I can’t drink my coffee black. I did ask for a splash of vanilla syrup, but that made the cold brew even yummier. The coffee was the perfect pairing to our pastries. The kouign amann was a perfect level of flakiness and the center… oh man… the center was perfectly buttery and the caramelized sugar on the bottom was the right amount of sweetness. If I had any less self control, I would’ve gone back to the other side of Waikiki for more. I was craving a good croissant for a long time, and the croissant from B. Patisserie satisfied my craving. The flavor was a bit muted because we ate the kouign amann first, but I think it would be very tasty with a sweeter coffee drink or a spread for the croissant.
I highly suggest spending a morning at Kona Coffee Purveyors for delicious coffee and even better pastries. I may even go back next weekend for more! Until next time…
