At the end of our first day in Manhattan, we decided to kick off our trip to New York with a classic, as my cousin called it—Balthazar. Despite our late 9:30 PM reservation, the restaurant was alive with that signature “New York City” energy.
Servers navigated the bustling space with practiced ease, the host expertly managing tables while graciously directing hopeful walk-ins to the already packed bar. Bussers and food runners moved in perfect harmony, creating an atmosphere of effortless sophistication.

We were seated promptly, and our server, Tri, was both attentive and thoughtful in recommending their favorites. We started with a bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, setting the tone for what would be a fantastic meal.

Our first dish was the Oysters Rockefeller—four oven-broiled oysters topped with spinach, crispy bacon, and golden breadcrumbs. It’s the perfect preparation for those who aren’t fans of the traditional oyster “gush” (as I like to call it). The toasted breadcrumbs added a delightful crunch, while the spinach and bacon balanced the dish with a savory depth that cut through the richness.
The kitchen kindly split our NY Strip Steak “Au Poivre” onto two plates, an unexpected but appreciated touch. It’s always a pleasant surprise when restaurants take that extra step without being asked.

The steak arrived cooked to a perfect medium-rare, encrusted with a generous layer of peppercorns. The accompanying sauce softened the spice’s sharp bite in just the right way. We’re big fans of a well-executed shoestring fry, and the accompanying frites did not disappoint—crispy, golden, and utterly addictive.
To round out our meal, we opted for the Pavlova, a dessert we rarely come across in Honolulu. It had all the textural contrasts that make a great pavlova: a crisp outer shell, a marshmallow-like interior, and a satisfyingly chewy base. The tart seasonal berry compote added a bright counterpoint to the sweetness, making each bite a perfect balance of flavors. As we savored the final spoonfuls, we soaked in the lively atmosphere, watching the hum of the restaurant from our cozy booth.

For anyone seeking a quintessential New York dining experience, I wholeheartedly recommend booking a reservation at Balthazar. The service is impeccable, the food is outstanding, and the energy of the city is palpable from the moment you step inside.
Until next time …
