What’s a trip to New York without getting a bagel, right? A coffee and bagel is one of my all-time favorite breakfasts—a staple from my college days that never fails to satisfy. There’s just something about a toasted, savory bagel paired with a sweetened coffee that makes for the perfect start to the day.
That was until I finally had a bagel from New York…

Part of me almost wishes I hadn’t tried it, because now I’ll be chasing that same experience back home. New York bagels are simply different. They have a uniquely chewy texture, yet still achieve the perfect crunch when toasted.
Before heading to the American Museum of Natural History, we needed a solid breakfast to fuel the day, and a bagel seemed like the obvious choice. There was a Broad Nosh Bagels near the museum, and ordering was an experience in itself. If you weren’t ready with your order, they moved on to the next customer. I knew what I wanted as soon as I saw the baskets of fresh bagels behind the counter, and case filled with filets of smoked salmon and various flavors of “schmear”. I opted for a classic: their smoked salmon nova lox bagel. It turned out to be one of the best bites of my entire trip.
I chose an Everything bagel, generously slathered with scallion cream cheese and layered with capers, thinly sliced red onion, fresh tomato, and silky smoked salmon lox.
Absolute heaven.
I devoured every last bite while people-watching in Central Park, fully immersed in the moment. Sure, I felt overly stuffed afterward, but that quintessential New York bagel experience—enjoyed in the heart of the city—is one I’ll never forget.
Until next time …
